Ministry committed to supporting Māori contribution

Te Puni Kōkiri Chief Executive Leith Comer says his Ministry remains committed to supporting the Māori contribution to NZ Inc. whenever and wherever it can.

“As early as 2003, Te Puni Kōkiri has focused its attention on Māori economic development in order to demonstrate the positive contribution Māori make to the New Zealand economy,” Mr Comer says. “We want to continue supporting the next stage of Māori economic development and especially the Māori contribution to NZ Inc.”

Mr Comer was commenting on the review of the Māori contribution to NZ Inc. over the last 12 months that was presented today by the Minister of Māori Affairs, Hon Dr Pita Sharples.

“In his speech, the Minister described how we are in a new era of business today and that Māori have so much to bring to the NZ Inc. table.

Valued at nearly $37 billion in 2010, the Māori economy is a commercial powerhouse within the New Zealand economy.

More and more Māori organisations are significant contributors to the New Zealand economy, tribal businesses are increasingly diversifying their portfolios, and Māori businesses and entrepreneurs are working together on major economic initiatives at home and overseas.

While international tourists and business people recognise how important Māori culture is to New Zealand, it’s equally important that the same recognition of the Māori contribution to NZ Inc occurs here at home too, Mr Comer adds.

“It’s now my task to lead my Ministry to continue to influence and support the growth of the Māori contribution to NZ Inc.,” Mr Comer says.
