Aotearoa NZ Is STILL Not For Sale – National Day of Action

Aotearoa NZ Is STILL Not For Sale – National Day of Action, Saturday July 14

Tomorrow will see an unprecedented coordination of protests, theatrical performances and hui against asset sales in 15 different towns and cities across New Zealand. In Auckland, we will meet at Britomart at 2pm for music (King Kapisi) and conversation, march up Queen St to the Town Hall for a hui, and hold a meeting at the Pioneer Women’s Hall following the action Other actions will be happening on this day in Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Nelson, Palmerston North, Tauranga, Timaru, the Hokianga, Takaka, Whanganui, Whangarei and Napier.

The ANFS Campaign is organised along the principles of Direct Democracy, and therefore the Auckland ANFS Campaign Committee has requested guidance from all Electoral ANFS Organising Committees in New Zealand, in order to determine the Official Policy of the Movement.

We request that they vote on and inform us of their collective decision on the following propositions:

Proposal #1: That all shares in Mighty River Power/Mercury Energy should be declared as “Unethical Investments”.

Proposal #2: That all persons opposed to Asset Sales should commit to not buying shares in the assets.

Proposal #3: That all persons opposed to Asset Sales should boycott Mighty River Power/Mercury Energy, and if possible switch to a state owned enterprise.

The Auckland ANFS Organising Committee has agreed to formally bind itself according to the determination of the national body. This is because we truly believe in the principles and power of Direct Democracy.

We agree to publish the results of the national vote no later than 6PM, Sunday, 15 July on the http://aotearoaisnotforsale.com/ website.

We warmly invite all people across our nation to attend an event in their town or city. We urge you to make a banner, paint a sign and use your voice in defiance of The National-led Government’s attacks on our birth rights, on our environment, on our workers and on our children’s futures. We will not be divided like our assets. We will be united, we will not be silenced, we will resist this together.

Gordon Campbell: On The 2013 Budget

Among Thursday’s main talking points:

We are apparently on track for a margin-of-error $75 million surplus, now in sight for 2014/15. But this sickly creature is hobbling out of the lab on the basis of all kinds of facilitative conjuring: such as trimming by $200 million the amount of new spending next time around.

With this strictly nominal surplus in sight, the 1984-ish justification for eternal austerity will have a news talisman: namely, getting Crown debt down to 20% of GDP by 2020. More>>

Budget Report, Lockup Audio & Images: Budget Day 2013 As always and especially after the managerial mishaps of the past few weeks and months, (e.g. Aaron Gilmore, the Mighty River Power share float, the GCSB mishaps) Budget Day 2013 was always going to be a pageant of reassurance... More>>

Budget 2013 Comment: Plain Sailing, But It's No America's Cup Pattrick Smellie: Compared to the last four budgets, this year's reflects an economy moving out of recession and into calmer waters... Yet if the fastest annual growth rate we can expect over the next two years is 3 percent - with the Christchurch rebuild in full swing - then you'd have to say New Zealand's underlying low-growth problem is far from fixed. Auckland Discord: Govt’s Power Hungry Housing Approach A Threat - Labour

Last week the Government said this, ‘The Government commits not to use any proposed or existing powers ... to override the council's planning and consenting processes’. Gordon Campbell:
On Stonewalling About The GCSB And MMP

This week has seen two examples of turkeys refusing to vote for an early Christmas – while busily denying the evident self interest involved. First, the GCSB is refusing to identify the 88 people it has illegally spied upon – as revealed in the Kitteridge report – and is donning the cloak of national security to justify its refusal to be transparent.
