Lament, Hope, Action: Christian Environmental Conference

24 August 2012

Lament, Hope, Action: Christian Environmental Conference in October focuses on creation care

A Rocha * Otago University Centre for Theology and Public Issues * Caritas

How does ‘care for creation’ become incorporated into the shared life of the Church, and into our everyday lives? How can our worship, our prayer, and our mission, demonstrate God’s love for the whole of creation? How do we encourage and enable others to live sustainably?

These are some of the questions behind Lament, Hope, Action: Christianity & the Ecological Crisis – a Christian environmental conference to be held in Wellington on 5-7 October (just after St Francis Day on 4 October). The Conference is being jointly hosted by Christian environmental group A Rocha, the Otago University Centre for Theology and Public Issues, and Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand (the Catholic social justice agency).

Opening speakers Professor Jonathan Boston and former Catholic Bishop of Palmerston North Peter Cullinane will outline the current ecological crisis, its moral causes and its challenges to Christians. Other speakers and workshops will discuss the different ways Christians are responding. The Conference will also include times of liturgy and prayer, drawing on different traditions to motivate and inspire our commitment to the world and its peoples.

The conference will end on Sunday afternoon with an invitation to join in practical environmental projects in Island Bay and Ōwhiro Bay.
