Living Wage support Living Communities

Wesley Community Action has joined the chorus of churches, community organisations and unions calling for public bodies and large employers to support the living wage.

Wesley Community Action Chairperson Peter Glensor said a fundamental part of a healthy community was that members of that community received a wage that supported their participation in the life of that community..

“When wages are paid below a sustainable level then the community becomes hollowed out and positive communities risk growing social problems and associated high costs for everyone,” said Peter Glensor.

“For example, a company that single-mindedly focuses on reducing its costs by contracting out core services or lowering wages could simply be passing on costs to some other part of society.”

“Our interconnectedness also means that if a big employer moves to a living wage then we all benefit,” said Peter Glensor

Wesley Community Action provides services to young people and the elderly in the Wellington area and is part of the Methodist Church, which has also endorsed the Living Wage.

Arguably Reassuring: Inspector-General Finds GCSB "Arguably" Legal

Of the 88 individuals:

• 15 cases involving 22 individuals did not have any information intercepted by GCSB.

• another four cases involving five individuals were the subjects of a New Zealand Security Intelligence Service warrant and the GCSB assisted in the execution of the warrants. The Inspector-General is of the view that there were arguably no breaches and the law is unclear.

• the Bureau only provided technical assistance which did not involve interception of communications, involving three of the individuals, so no breach occurred.

• the remaining cases involved the collection of metadata, and the Inspector-General formed the view that there had arguably been no breach, noting once again that the law is unclear.
