Waikato-Tainui: Parekura Horomia a Man of the People

Ka taakina ake raa te rehu o te raa ki te rua

Waiho mai ki muri nei he haku, he mooteatea, he apakura.

Koia ko te hinganga o te tootara, koia ko te hunanga o te tangata!

Waikato-Tainui is expressing its deepest sympathies and condolences to the whaanau of Hon Parekura Horomia.

Waikato-Tainui Raupatu Lands Trust chief executive Parekawhia McLean described Mr Horomia as a much-loved man of the people and acknowledged the extensive contribution that he had made to improve the status of Maaori.

As both Minister of Maaori Affairs and whilst in Opposition, Mr Horomia had offered his support to Waikato-Tainui efforts to settle raupatu claims and pursue development opportunities for its people. His support role in the historic settlement of its Waikato river claim had been invaluable.

Ms McLean said Mr Horomia was a loyal supporter of the Kiingitanga, never missing the annual Koroneihana celebrations.

A Waikato-Tainui contingent will accompany Kiingi Tuheitia to Hauiti Marae at Tolaga Bay on Wednesday 1 May 2013 to formally pay its respects to Mr Horomia and his whaanau.
