Spring Hill Corrections Facility disorder incident

Department of Corrections statement: Spring Hill Corrections Facility disorder incident

Please attribute to Ray Smith, Corrections Chief Executive

“This morning I have personally witnessed the damage caused by the prisoners involved in this incident.

"No matter what the prisoners motivation was, their behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. They will now face the consequences of their actions. Many prisoners have long histories of violence and unpredictable behaviour, and our staff successfully manage this on a daily basis.

“Specialist teams trained to deal with incidents like this were assembled and at about 8pm last night they successfully brought the situation under control.

“I am very proud of the efforts of my staff who worked to resolve this incident without any danger to the public, their actions saved prisoners lives.

“Our thoughts are with those who were injured by the actions of those prisoners involved. Three staff members sustained injuries and I will be in touch with them to follow up as they recuperate.

“We have received excellent support from our partner agencies throughout this incident. Corrections and Police will begin investigations in to the incident and I expect that charges will follow.”
