Defence Force Leading the Way

The Sensible Sentencing Trust says other Government departments could learn a lot from the Defence Force.

Spokesman Garth McVicar said the fact that the Defence Force has admitted responsibility in the role it played in the tragic death of Private Michael Ross was an example other Crown entities could learn from.

“The Defence Force has admitted they got it wrong, implemented changes to prevent similar tragedies, apologised to the family and paid reparation to Private Ross’ family.”

Mr. McVicar said the response from the Defence Force was an exemplary example of what should happen when someone lost their life as a result of a failing or error on the part of the Department responsible.

“We congratulate and salute them for that, Parliament and many government departments could learn from their example.”

“Far too often we see innocent members of the public being attacked, injured, raped or worse still, murdered, by dangerous offenders who have been granted bail, parole or early release and the response is normally total denial or pass-the-buck.”

Mr. McVicar pointed to the death of Christie Marceau as a classic example. Christie was stabbed to death by Ashkay Chand who was released on bail after an earlier kidnapping and attempted rape of her.

“We believe Judge McNaughton who released Chand was not only negligent but also failed in his duty to ensure an innocent member of the public was protected from someone who had already shown he was dangerous.”

“As the Defence Force has said the tragic death of Private Michael Ross should not have happened and they have apologised to the family and taken steps to prevent similar tragedies but they have also acknowledged they have failed every parent in New Zealand who has entrusted their son or daughter to them.”

“There are thousands of Victims in this country who have been created by, and re-victimized by, a systemic and cavalier attitude and approach to public safety by our legislators and Crown entities entrusted with our safety and protection.” ENDS

New Court Orders, Screening, Guardianship Changes...: Government Ignoring Poverty, Again

It remains to be seen if announcements today will better protect children, but the National Government is forgoing an opportunity to really help kids by ignoring the elephant in the room, which is poverty, Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei says.
