Barnardos welcomes legislation changes to protect children

Barnardos New Zealand has welcomed today’s announcement by Minister of Social Development Paula Bennett to standardise the screening of people working with children, increase the reporting requirements of State agencies, and constrain the movements of people who pose a safety risk to children.

“We believe these are positive steps that demonstrate a strong commitment by government towards ensuring the right of all children in Aotearoa/New Zealand to be safe from abuse,” says Barnardos Chief Executive Jeff Sanders.

“Continued implementation of the Children’s Action Plan through these legislative changes gives a clear signal that child abuse is not acceptable and will not be tolerated in our communities.”

“Barnardos is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most trusted child-centred agencies and we support any effort to protect children from abuse and neglect,” continues Jeff. “These systemic changes are all important steps in the effort to create a society that values and nurtures our children. We welcome today’s announcements and will continue to work with government to improve the lives of vulnerable New Zealand children.”
