Miners’ union welcomes Solid Energy deal

The deal announced today between the Government, Solid Energy, and its backers is a relief to mine workers and offers hope for their future says the EPMU, the union for miners.

“This agreement gives workers who are still employed with Solid Energy some much-needed security,” says Ged O’Connell, EPMU acting national secretary. “It has been an incredibly difficult time for them and their families.”

“We are very pleased with the comments of Solid Energy chairman Mark Ford, who has committed to re-establishing the company as a major employer in communities which have been devastated by job cuts.”

In addition to the 700 jobs which have been lost in the past year, remaining Solid Energy workers have accepted reductions in their employment conditions in order to keep the company as financially viable as possible.

“The situation Solid Energy was in was not caused by miners, but by irresponsible management and governance. Now we have the opportunity to rebuild a strong, long-term business and get people back into work.”

“We call on the Government to support Solid Energy and Kiwi miners by creating an effective procurement policy which encourages New Zealand businesses to buy New Zealand coal instead of importing it from overseas.”

Trial Over 'Anonymous' Donations: John Banks Resigns As Minister
