Sexualised Bus Ad to Be Removed After Complaint by Family Group

ladagagaFamily First NZ has received notification from the Howick and Eastern Bus Company that they have asked their advertising agency to remove an objectionable billboard on the back of their buses. The image advertising Lady Gaga’s latest album features the partly-covered naked singer in a provocative pose.

“We’re stoked that Howick and Eastern Bus Company have responded to the concerns of families and have shown social responsibility,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ.

“It is vital that families continue to speak up rather than accept the sexualisation of girls and women in the media. Parents need to take the responsibility for protecting our children until they are old enough to do it for themselves.”

“Unfortunately the advertising industry cannot be relied upon to self-regulate, and the Advertising Standards Authority reviews objectionable adverts so long after the ad have been displayed that the damage is already done.”

Family First NZ is calling for the government to review and tighten codes around television advertising, billboards and outdoor advertising, including pre-vetting and to review the classification of music videos and video games specifically with regard to sexualised imagery.
