Responding to the NZ Herald report that Tauranga City
Councillor Clayton Mitchell does not intend on rescinding
his Council seat if he is elected as an MP for New Zealand
First, Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan
Williams says:
“Cr Mitchell appears to be
following the example of NZ First Deputy Leader Tracey
Martin who did not resign from her position as a Member of
the Rodney Local Board when she was elected to Parliament in
2011.”
“Members of Parliament should be entirely
focused on representing their electorates. How can someone
be an effective MP when they are also paid to be on a city
council?"
“We’re calling on NZ First leader Winston
Peters to step in and make clear that his party will not
tolerate another
'double-dipper'.”
