Taskforce Welcomed to Curb Excess Local Government
Control
22 JULY 2014 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The
Taxpayers’ Union is welcoming Prime Minister John Key’s announcement at the LGNZ
conference in Nelson to establish a 'Rules Reduction
Taskforce'.Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan
Williams, says:
“From pensioners getting prosecuted for
pruning trees on their property, to Nelson City Council’s
recent decision to ban sugary drinks,
local government rules and regulations are getting out of
control.”
“There is an irony that while the nation’s
mayors are gathered in Nelson for cocktails and canapés
paid for by ratepayers, the local council is passing new
rules to ban an innocent can of coke at events like the
Christmas parade.”
“It’s high time the Government
introduced such a measure to reign in the local government
sector. Without it they’ll soon be banning the sugar in
our
coffee."
