Trucks, Trains And Bikes --- Transport Debate

Trucks, Trains And Bikes --- Transport Debate

Trucks and cars have proved to be two of the more controversial issues this campaign.
The Greens have led the charge with their "Love New Zealand" campaign and its focus on environment policies.

"The Green Party transport plan will give people vibrant, greener cities, where public transport is fast, clean and affordable," They are proposing more emphasis on public transport and rail and even coastal shipping with encouragement for the development of safe cycling and walking paths in cities.

Even the Government agrees with that with the announcement last weekend that a National Government would spend $100 million over the next three years on cycle tracks.

The future of KiwiRail is a big issue and we expect to ask Gerry Brownlee about that tomorrow --- the Government has invested $1 billion in KiwiRail --- mostly while Mr Brownlee was Minister. However profit fell 28% this year and the company is cautious about the future.

We also expect to discuss Roads of National Significance -- including the "Holiday Highway" and will take up Ms Genter's complaint that provincial roads, particularly in Northland are being ignored.
But the big issue is Auckland --- how to fund the rail loop and future motorway extensions.

This will be the only transport debate on TV and therefore will be a must-watch for anyone who drives - or bikes - or uses a bus or train.
