Cleaning out clogged bureaucratic arteries of the health system will get better health.

“ACT is the only party that believes that you should make the choice about something as serious as your health not a state bureaucrat”, said ACT leader Dr Jamie Whyte.

“For that reason ACT’s health policy will enable families and individuals to choose a health insurance policy paid for by the government that meets their needs.”

ACT believes when an individual or family people can choose their own level of coverage and the co payment they are able to make towards the cost of their healthcare the country will have a personally targeted system of health costs assistance.

“The most sensible change that ACT would make to New Zealand’s health system is to make the government the funder of health and disability services not necessarily the provider of the service. ACT understands that patients are not concerned whether they are treated in a taxpayer owned and operated hospital or a private hospital. What health system users want is swift effective healthcare.”

“Only by having Public Private Health Partnerships in public hospitals, only by having competition between State run and private health providers will our health care services achieve this goal. ACT’s healthcare plan will put the clinicians in charge of making high quality health treatment decisions, not bureaucrats.

"ACT believes that the co-payment election bribes of National, the Greens and Labour giving “free” visits to wide sectors of the community is costly to taxpayers and no benefit to the health system.

“Millionaire pensioners getting free doctor’s visits means taxpayers paying their costs to see a doctor that any self respecting millionaire would be pleased to pay themselves.

By giving people the choice of a health insurance cover ACT would be able to target the payment of taxpayers funds to individuals in need of government assistance and give those who can afford it the dignity of paying their way when visiting doctors.”

“Reducing the size of the Ministry of Health and putting any savings into funding insurance premiums for families and individuals will clean out the clogged arteries of the health system.” said Jamie Whyte.
