Smith Returns to Environment

Prime Minister John Key today announced his reshuffled cabinet, suggesting changes are about rejuvenating and promoting new talent. A number of significant changes were confirmed including to Ministers responsible for both the Environment and Conservation.

Dr Nick Smith returns to the Environmental portfolio, where Key said the initial focus will be on looking at draft legislation around the reformed RMA and seeking to implement changes. Dr Smith has been a keen supporter of community involvement in land and water management and oversaw the work of the Land and Water Forum.

In addition Maggie Barry has been given the Conservation portfolio. The Prime Minister stated Barry has a background including National's Blue Green group and has demonstrated a commitment to this sector that will help fill the space left by Smith's move to the Environment.

NZ Landcare Trust CEO Dr Nick Edgar welcomes the return of Dr Smith to the Environment portfolio, "Dr Smith has a proven track record as Minister for the Environment and has been a supporter of the community driven approach of NZ Landcare Trust. We look forward to working with him to support the Trust's national landcare programme and collaborative approaches to water management across New Zealand.”
