Smith / Traynor debacle leaves many questions to be answered

Smith / Traynor debacle leaves many questions to be answered

How can it be that a convicted killer and paedophile can appear in Court and be found guilty of crimes under a name that is not legally his? – McVicar

The Justice Spokesman for the Conservative Party says the plot around runaway killer Phillip John Smith has reached a new low point following confirmation that there is no record of Traynor changing his name officially to Phillip John Smith, the name he was convicted under.

McVicar who was the Conservative Party candidate for Napier and is also founder of the Sensible Sentencing Trust says he is appalled by the systemic failures within New Zealand Justice System.

“New Zealand once had a Justice System that was hailed as one of the best in the World, and a crime rate to correspond; now we have this politically correct monstrosity that allows criminals to appear in Court under a false name without any proof of their identity.”

“It beggars belief that Smith could sexually abuse a child, stalk the family and ultimately kill the father and yet appear in Court under a name that was not legally his.”

“For that same offender to then dupe Corrections and the Parole Board to grant him day release under his assumed identity while all the time he was applying for a passport under his birth name is ludicrous.”

McVicar said the Conservative Party intended calling on the Government for a full and open inquiry into the circumstances leading up to and allowing Phillip Traynor, a convicted murderer and paedophile, to be granted a passport and flee New Zealand.

“We believe there is a can-of-worms to be uncovered and outcome of such an inquiry will no doubt upset a few civil libertarians but public safety must always be the paramount consideration.”
