Parliamentary Conference on Growth for Development

New Zealand to attend International Parliamentary Conference on Growth for Development

Member of Parliament Jami-Lee Ross is in London next week to take part in the
International Parliamentary Conference on Growth for Development hosted by the United Kingdom Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA UK) and the World Bank Group.

The conference will focus on the role of parliamentarians in encouraging responsible and sustainable economic growth for the benefit of all citizens. Plenary sessions and practical workshops will focus on the three key functions of parliamentarians; Legislation, Oversight and Representation. The conference also hopes to introduce innovative and sustainable approaches to scrutinizing and influencing economic policies to ensure sustainable growth and equitable development outcomes.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon David Carter, said that the conference is an important and timely forum for members of Parliament to discuss sustainable approaches to growth and economic development.

“The conference will allow members of Parliament from across the Commonwealth to engage in discussions with their colleagues around how best to balance robust economic policy with equitable social policy outcomes. As the global economy continues to emerge from an extended period of slow and in some cases stagnant growth, this is a valuable opportunity to discuss new ways of supporting sustainable economic growth. I am very pleased that the New Zealand Parliament will be represented at the conference, and believe that we will make a positive contribution to deliberations.”

The conference runs from 17 – 20 November.
