Warriors promote White Ribbon Day message Shine and Orakei Health Services
On Tuesday, the Vodafone Warriors will promote the White Ribbon Day message to the community at Eastridge Shopping Centre, Mission Bay. The Warriors are supporting their charity partner Shine and Orakei Health Services by distributing white ribbons from 5-6pm.
Orakei Health Services and Shine will be handing out ribbons at Eastridge Shopping Centre from 10am, as well as promoting their services. Both organisations want to encourage people who are experiencing family violence to talk to their GP at Eastridge Medical Centre or contact Shine directly.
“White Ribbon Day is to emphasise that violence against women is unacceptable, and primary healthcare professionals – GP’s and practise nurses -- have a key role to play in ending violence towards women,” says Shine’s Deepika Sarmah.
The partnership of Orakei Health Services and Shine has become a model for effective family violence screening by Primary Health Organisations. All of the medical staff, including GPs and practice nurses, have been trained and are routinely asking their patients about family violence, and referring them to Shine if they disclose abuse. The screening is having hugely positive outcomes for the community.
Gabrielle Moss, a GP at Orakei Health Services, says, “GP’s and practice nurses are in an ideal position to address family violence at the coalface. (It’s) not simply to deal with extreme cases, but to ask all women the question of whether or not family violence is an issue at home.”
