Green’s 'not speaking out about human rights abuses in China

Why are Green’s not speaking out about human rights abuses in China?

Media Release 21 November 2014

Right to Life challenges Russell Norman the co-leader of the Green Party to explain why, he was prepared to ask Prime Minister John Key to talk to Chinese President Xi Jinping about human rights abuses in countries bordering China but ignored the opportunity to ask about the massive violation of human rights perpetrated by the Chinese government against its own people. We refer to China’s notorious one child family policy.

The Chinese government is guilty of the most horrendous human rights abuses against women that the world has ever known. It denies the human right of families to choose how many children they are going to have. A family is required to obtain a permit authorising the birth of a child. Pregnancies that are not authorised are required by law to be aborted. Women who are not married, who become pregnant are required to have an abortion. Children who are born without a permit are not recognised by the state and are denied health services, and an education.

Russell Norman, in a media release of 19 November, urged the Prime Minister John Key, when talking with Chinese President Xi Jinping, to address the issue of human rights of Tibetan, Hong Kong and Ulghur people.There was no mention of China’s One Child policy, nor has there been any previous mention of these human rights abuses in media releases from the Greens.The silence of the Greens is shameful. They should be a voice for the victimised and wounded women of China who tragically have the highest rate of suicide in the world, at the rate of 500 each day.

China’s one child family policy started in 1979, has resulted in forced abortions, 196 million compulsory sterilisations, the mandatory insertion of 403 million forced intrauterine devices, punitive fines, imprisonment, destruction of homes and loss of employment. Sex selective abortions have resulted in 37 million missing girls. Since 1971 there have been 330 million abortions.

The Greens aspire to be in government and have a serious duty to the community to promote family policies that protect the human rights of families and the right to life of every member of the human family.

The community has a right to know if the Greens support or oppose China’s family policy, on which seriously violates human rights.

Right to Life asks, do the Greens believe;

• That the state has the right to decide how many children a family may have?

• That children conceived without a permit from the state should be killed?

·Why do the Greens not recognise that China’s one child family policy is the most important human rights issue facing the people of China today?

Right to Life encourages the media in the interest of the common good and in the interest of the oppressed and suffering people of China to pursue these important human rights issues with the Green Party and the government.

Gordon Campbell: On Dune 2, And Images Of Islam

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Five years on from the mosque shootings, this is one of the cultural headwinds that the Muslim community has to battle against. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
