Kiwis now fifth in the world for giving
New Zealanders can stand tall and proud to be placed fifth in the world for giving and for volunteer participation.
The World Giving Index 2014 measures charitable behaviour among its people, measuring donations of money to charities, volunteer time and how often people helped a stranger.
“The nature of giving for kiwis has been consistently high, and New Zealand has moved from eighth place last year to fifth - for proportion of people who volunteer time. Volunteers are a vital part of our society, their work is so valuable ,” says Vanisa Dhiru, Chief Executive of Volunteering New Zealand.
On Tuesday 2 December, New Zealand will see the launch of #GivingTuesday, a global campaign to get people to work together and improve their local communities, and to give back in more meaningful ways during the giving season.
Vanisa says, “We want to get kiwis to think about giving back in better and smarter ways. Giving can be donating money, providing free goods, or helping out in your neighbourhood. Volunteering is integral to many clubs, societies and charities. Let’s all consider how we might pitch in to help our local causes and groups that are making a difference to our nation.”
