Wellington amalgamation proposal must involve those on the frontline

Following the Local Government Commission’s decision on reorganisation of Wellington councils, the union representing staff at all councils affected, the Public Service Association (PSA), is calling on staff to be involved at every level of discussion.

Richard Wagstaff, PSA National Secretary, said “Our members work hard to deliver quality services that the Wellington region’s residents value so highly,”

“Local government staff need to be engaged at every step in this process to ensure positive outcomes for all in the region.

“The PSA has experience with local government amalgamations, including the Auckland super-city, and we’re happy to share that expertise.

“Our members working at councils across the region are also residents, and will have a diversity of views on the decision, but are united in wanting a fair deal for council workers.

“Understandably the news has left members fearful of job losses. The PSA believes that any reorganisation should start from a base of maintaining or improving service delivery not cutting it.

“We look forward to engaging constructively to ensure the best possible outcome for Wellington local government workers and all residents in the region,” said Richard Wagstaff.
