Brutal Home Invasion on Defenceless Elderly Couple

Brutal Home Invasion on Defenceless and Vulnerable Elderly Couple in Waikanae

11/12/14

“Home invasions are despicable and cowardly crimes that must result in a mandatory sentence that reflects the public’s abhorrence and lets the criminals know that society will not tolerate this sort of behaviour.” Leigh Woodman.

The Sensible Sentencing Trust wants a new offence of ‘Home Invasion’ to be established with a maximum sentence of 25 year but with a mandatory 10 year minimum.

SST Wellington Spokesperson, Leigh Woodman says the news of the senseless and brutal attack in the quiet seaside town of Waikanae on an elderly couple in their 80’s and in their own home, is heart breaking and horrific. “Our hearts go out to them; they and every person have the right to feel and be safe in their own home.”

“I hope the Police find the cowardly and brutal perpetrators of this home invasion on a defenceless old couple ASAP and the full force of the law is brought down on them.”

“Home invasion under any circumstance is an extremely serious crime made worse when multiple offenders are involved and weapons are carried.”

“The law must strongly deter and denounce home invasion and penalties must ultimately reflect the public abhorrence and repugnance of such shocking crimes.”

The Sensible Sentencing Trust wants a new offence of ‘Home Invasion’ be established carrying a maximum sentence of 25 years but with a mandatory minimum of 10 years.

Woodman says the mandatory 10 year minimum was to ensure Judges clearly understood society’s revulsion of such crimes and were required to give a sentence to reflect that.

“Our home is our castle and the paramount purpose of any legislation must be to ensure that principle is enshrined into our law.”
