Minister Must Take Responsibility for Holiday Speed Backlash

12 JANUARY 2015
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Taxpayers’ Union is welcoming what looks set to be a U-turn by Police Minister Michael Woodhouse on the lowered summer speed tolerance. Taxpayers’ UnionExecutive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“The lowered speed threshold was as much a tool for revenue gathering as an effort to save lives. With the increased holiday road toll, the public’s patience is running thin. We’ve heard numerous stories from members and supporters about tickets for traveling slightly over the limit, including in the middle of the night and while passing other vehicles."

“By labelling the decision an 'operational matter', Mr Woodhouse is trying to distance himself from the decision to lower the threshold. That’s despite the Minister personally launching the initiative at a special event at Piha with photography, catering and a taxpayer funded rent-a-croud.”

“Mr Woodhouse should pull the plug rather than conduct an expensive consultation process which we all know the outcome of."
