The Taxpayers' Union is
labelling today's social housing announcements half-hearted
and disappointing for taxpayers.
Responding to
the speech delivered by Prime Minister John Key, Taxpayers'
UnionExecutive Director, Jordan Williams, says:
"At a
time when the number of beneficiaries and unemployed is
falling the Government is promising to increase the number
of income-related rent subsidies. Rather than raiding
taxpayers for another $40 million a year, the Government
should be focused on lowering the regulatory taxes of
building, maintaining and refurbishing affordable
housing."
Regarding reported comments that the
Government's proposals are 'evil' Mr Williams says, "The
labelling of the proposal as 'evil' is shameless ideological
hyperbole. The only 'evil' in social housing are those
recipients who are not entitled to taxpayer support but are
occupying houses intended for those most in need. We should
all welcome the increased tenancy reviews which will mean
less waste and more support for those who most need
it."

Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik... More
