National opens selection for Northland by-election candidate

National opens selection for Northland by-election candidate

The National Party has today opened nominations to select its candidate for the upcoming Northland by-election.

“While the Northland electorate has been held by the National Party for many years, by-elections traditionally see lower turnouts and smaller margins,” said National Party President Peter Goodfellow.

“We will not be taking Northland for granted and my message to the successful candidate will be: prepare to put in the hard yards, we’ve got a big job ahead.”

National runs a robust and highly democratic selection process. Applicants must first complete a formal application and then face a pre-selection panel interview. Successful applicants then go before local party members for a final selection to elect the candidate who can best represent the electorate.

“I’m very confident the members will select a high calibre candidate who can keep Northland’s strong voice in John Key’s National Government,” said Mr Goodfellow.

Nominations will remain open until midday, Thursday 12 February. A final candidate selection will take place before the end of the month.
