The Sensible Sentencing Trust congratulates the Parole Board for standing its ground and resisting moves by the Corrections Department to risk public safety by letting Paul Joseph Dally – who brutally murdered Karla Cardno in 1990 – back into the community because he “might” be able to be managed outside prison.
“Paul Dally is the best example you will ever find of a vicious psychopathic killer for whom the so-called ‘life’ sentence he was given should be made a reality” said SST founder Garth McVicar.
“Karla’s savage and brutal murder led indirectly to the formation of the Trust, when Mark Middleton - Karla’s stepfather - was threatened with jail for saying what any decent father would about what should happen to Dally if he was ever released” McVicar said. “While we don’t condone vigilante justice, and would never counsel our members or supporters to engage in it, Dally could almost be regarded as a special case” said McVicar.
“Dally enraged Karla’s stepfather by boasting to fellow inmates about what he had done to Karla”.
“Throughout his time in jail Dally has never shown any remorse for his depraved actions, and now, because they admit they don’t know what else to do with him, Corrections has seized on some dopey psychologist’s report and urged the Parole Board to release him. Clearly this psychologist is completely indifferent to public safety” said McVicar.
“Even the psychologist will only say Dally ‘might be able to be able to be managed in the community’. Fortunately, and greatly to their credit, the Parole Board is having none of that, and at least for now, has indicated that Dally stays where he belongs – behind bars”. McVicar said.
“Although the families left behind can often never come to terms with it, we accept thatsome murderers can and probably should be released after paying a lengthy debt to society. However there are others – and Paul Joseph Dally is foremost among them – who should only leave prison in a wooden box” said McVicar.
“We are sometimes critical of the Parole Board, and no doubt will be again on occasion. However in this case we say ‘Well done for putting the community’s safety first’. Paul Dally is a deeply evil man who will never change. Neither should the place where he lives out his life.”
