Commitment to original deal is expected

International Convention Centre – “Commitment to the original deal is what New Zealanders expect”

Michael Barnett, head of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, was responding to today’s announcement that SkyCity will look at modifying the convention centre design to fit within the agreement with Government to build the centre at no cost to tax payers.

“It is reassuring that both parties have agreed to continue the project, and I would have expected nothing less,” said Mr Barnett.

Having an international convention centre will lift New Zealand up the value chain not just for hosting large global events, but as an attractor for investment, new businesses and flow on tourism impacts across the whole country.
“As I have said repeatedly - the gains from this will widespread – not only some 1500 jobs during the construction phase, but for tourism – hotels, food and beverage sector, transport, tourism packages to visit provincial centres, and branding New Zealand internationally.

“Nonetheless both parties have a lot of trust re-building they need to do with New Zealanders as they move ahead on this,” concluded Mr Barnett.
