Best of a Bad Lot Still Bad

Responding to the report that 66 percent of Aucklanders submitting on the Auckland Council’s 10-year budget prefer motorway tolls over higher rates,Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“The Council’s 130 spin doctors are working overtime to frame this as ‘support’ for motorway tolls. In reality submitters were only given two choices – between being taxed more or tolled. Of course ratepayers are going to opt for anything that stops the incessant rate rises.”

“Everyday new examples of Auckland Council’s waste and extravagance are becoming public. Instead of an option to trim the fat, get back to basics and avoid the need for more taxes and tolls, the Council’s glossy consultation documents present only an either-or option of higher rates or tolls. It's dishonest to call it consultation at all.”
