The
Taxpayers’ Union is welcoming Revenue Minister Todd
McClay’s announcementof a Government
U-turn in relation to requiring bodies corporate to register
for GST.Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan
Williams, says:
“We’ve been calling for these
changes since Mr McClay announced this unfair and
un-signalled rule change in June last year. At the time we
criticised the way the Minister was making tax law by press
release with his promise of backdating enabling
legislation.”
“While we welcome today's announcement,
these sorts of policy u-turns are inevitable when
significant changes to tax policy are made without public
consultation.”
In June the Taxpayers’ Union was
joined by the former Deputy Commission of IRD, Robin Oliver
and tax specialist Mike Shaw in calling for this change.
