3News Reid Research Northland Poll Shock

3News Reid Research has done the first poll of the crucial Northland electorate since Winston Peters threw his hat in the ring - and it has real a shock for one of the main contenders.

3News Political Editor Patrick Gower says the result will leave one party reeling.

"This will be keenly watched as the stakes are incredibly high. If Peters takes the seat, the balance of power changes in Parliament and things could get tricky for National.

"On the flipside Peters' reputation is on the line, he hates losing and won't want to be embarrassed."

The 3News Reid Research poll of 500 people was conducted between Monday and Wednesday this week.
