Perk Proposal a Bridge Too Far
Perk Proposal a Bridge Too Far
The Taxpayers’ Union is calling on the Government to withdraw Hon. Simon Bridges’ Supplementary Order Paper that would nearly double the value of international travel perks for former MPs. Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:
"At a time when MPs are facing a public backlash for continued pay hikes, Mr Bridges wants to increase the lavish taxpayer-funded perks for retired politicians. Has Mr Bridges learnt nothing from the fall-out over the recent Remuneration Authority decision?"
"The proposal, which was quietly slipped into an innocuous statute amendment bill, suggests the Government is merely paying lip service to the public's concern about MP remuneration."
"This shows once again that when it comes to MPs' pay politicians can't be trusted to protect taxpayers."
