Taxpayers' Union Welcomes Green Party Pledge

MEDIA RELEASE:
Taxpayers' Union Welcomes Green Party Pledge
16 MARCH 2015
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Taxpayers’ Union is welcoming confirmation from the Green Party that it will block Simon Bridges’ proposal to increase travel entitlements for MPs elected prior to 1999. Taxpayers’ Union Spokesman, Ben Craven, says:

“We welcome the Greens’ opposition to this ridiculous proposal, which would see former MPs and their spouses likely to increase their taxpayer-funded travel allowances from $11,000 to approximately $20,000 per year.”

“In the wake of the blundering Remuneration Authority proposal to increase MPs’ salaries, the last thing taxpayers want to see is politicians voting to increase entitlements for former Parliamentary colleagues and their spouses.”

“Quite frankly it’s outrageous that taxpayers continue to prop up the lifestyles of former MPs with any form of travel entitlements at all.”
