SST Congratulates NZ First on Name Suppression proposal

SST Congratulates NZ First on Name Suppression and Sex Offender proposal

The Sensible Sentencing Trust congratulates NZ First for acting on the issue of post-conviction name suppression with their new Bill put forward by Winston Peters.

A Spokesman for SST, Peter Jenkins, said that In addition NZ First proposes to back this up with a publically available sex offender register, another measure which SST and many victims and their families have been requesting for some time.

“National has had multiple opportunities to act on both issues and have consistently failed to do so, despite the fact that both would be highly popular with voters and relatively inexpensive to implement in comparison with road bridges and other such infrastructure that Northland is being promised at present.”

“As NZ First has quite correctly pointed out, there have been numerous examples where offenders have hidden behind a cloak of secrecy imposed on the basis, often ill-founded, that secrecy protects the victim.”

SST Founder and National Spokesman, Garth McVicar also supports the proposal and says the Name Suppression Bill proposed by N Z First is long overdue and said the Trust was happy to support any political party that put the safety of children as a paramount consideration.

“SST has lobbied hard and long on abolishing name suppression and likewise with a publicly available sex offender’s register, New Zealand has a shocking level of child abuse and any measure that helps stops this and reduced the number of abused children has got our support.”
