Government Should Stop Robbing Peter to Pay Paul to Buy a House
31 MARCH 2015
The Taxpayers’ Union is calling on the Government to abandon its KiwiSaver HomeStart programme and instead tackle the regulatory taxes strangling the housing market. Boosted entitlements to the first home buyers subsidy programme come into effect tomorrow. Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:
“Only politicians could tell the public with a straight face that by giving money to groups of first home buyers, housing will be more affordable for all. They know that this just adds fuel to the fire, forcing prices up even higher for entry level homes."
“Every expert in the country is telling the Government that local planning laws, councils and RMA regulation are what the problem is. Prices will continue to go up when the regulatory tax on housing means there is an undersupply.”
“The Government should stop robbing Peter to pay Paul to buy a house and fuel demand. Meaningful relief would be to slash the regulatory tape that makes it tremendously hard for my generation to buy or build our first home.”
