Workers to go ahead with strikes at McDonald's today
Workers to go ahead with strikes at McDonald's today. BK agree to end zero hour contracts.
April 15
Unite
union is proceeding with strikes against McDonald's stores
today after a failed mediation yesterday.
The actions in New Zealand are the first of an international day of action by fast food workers for secure hours, better pay and union representation.Tens of thousands of workers are expected to join the actions worldwide.
However the union says they will not be striking at Burger King stores because that company has come back with an offer that will see an end to zero hour contracts and ensure that all workers have regular shifts within the next six months.
McDonald's offer to the union at bargaining was a joke says Unite National Director Mike Treen.
They claimed they would guarantee 80% of their "rostered hours". But rosters can go up and down and workers have no control over them. There is no way for workers to verify the fairness of a roster.
Workers usually work 20% more hours than they are rostered. By offering 80% or 80% we are getting to a pretty small number said Mr Treen.
Worker will be taking action in the main centres.
The workers taking action are very brave workers and they need peoples support. The union is asking for people to go to their website and sign on to a letter to McDonald's asking them to join the 21st century and end zero hour contracts.
