Otago Activist Academics Rub Salt into Wound

Otago Activist Academics Rub Salt into Wound

Responding to the Fairfax report on calls by Otago University academics for a 'salt tax' on food, Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“These academics are saying that 'no one will notice' a $450 million tax. Tell that to those families already struggling with the grocery bill."

"Perhaps in their ivory towers higher grocery bills don't matter, but for many New Zealanders another sting in the pocket will leave a bitter taste in the mouth.”

“Recent calls have proposed taxes on sugar, fat, and now salt appears to be the flavour of the month. The proposals are always the same – more taxes with the proceeds going to more public health political activism dressed up as 'research'.”

"Denmark's experiment with a tax on saturated fat shows how these initiatives are economic disasters and have little, if any, effect on those over-consuming. Otago University would be better to look at the economic reasons for that fiasco, than continue to produce calls for new taxes under a health banner."
