Revenue From New Tax Should Not Be Left to Politicians

The Taxpayers’ Union is calling on the Government to signal that increased revenue from the new property tax measures announced today will be used for tax relief rather than squandered by politicians. Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“While experts can argue as to the effectiveness of the new measures to dampen property inflation, the new tax should not be used as a sneaky way for the Government to get back into surplus.”

“While this Government talks the talk about reducing taxes, its tax relief measures have barely kept up with 'bracket creep’ — the income tax increases caused by inflation.”

“The Government should signal meaningful tax relief in next week’s budget and get back into surplus by cutting wasteful spending. Employing stealth tax hikes dressed up as an initiative to help cool the housing market won’t fool anyone."
