Revenue From New Tax Should Not Be Left to Politicians
Revenue From New Tax Should Not Be Left to
Politicians
17 MAY 2015
FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE
The
Taxpayers’ Union is calling on the Government to signal
that increased revenue from the new property tax measures
announced today will be used for tax relief rather than
squandered by politicians. Taxpayers’ Union Executive
Director, Jordan Williams, says:
“While experts can argue as to the effectiveness of the new measures to dampen property inflation, the new tax should not be used as a sneaky way for the Government to get back into surplus.”
“While this Government talks the talk about reducing taxes, its tax relief measures have barely kept up with 'bracket creep’ — the income tax increases caused by inflation.”
“The Government should signal meaningful tax relief in next week’s budget and get back into surplus by cutting wasteful spending. Employing stealth tax hikes dressed up as an initiative to help cool the housing market won’t fool anyone."
