No New Taxes - Yeah Right
No New Taxes - Yeah Right
The Taxpayers' Union is calling on the Associate Minister of Health, Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, to reaffirm the National Party's election promise not to introduce new taxes on hard working kiwis after his refusal to rule out new hikes to tobacco excise tax.Taxpayers' Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:
"National's election promise was no new taxes. Since then, it has introduced the international travel tax and extended a tax on telecommunications operators."
"Excise tax on tobacco is already being used as a revenue gathering tool with the amounts collected vastly exceeding the additional health costs according to Treasury. Taxes on smoking should cover the costs of smokers, not politicians."
“Any further increases would be revenue gathering and virtue-signalling, as well as another breach of an election promise."
