OECD Sends Warning Over Regulatory Taxes & Housing
Reacting to the OECD’s latest biannual report on New Zealand which cites “burdensome” planning rules as the reason for the high cost of housing and restricting economic growth, Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:
“Nobody doubts that we should have a strong regulatory framework to protect New Zealand’s unique natural features. But the current framework, particularly the RMA’s bias toward the status quo, means many young adults are simply unable to get onto the housing ladder."
“Every expert group, from the New Zealand Initiative think tank, the universities and now even the OECD say that the reason for our housing shortage is red tape. The politicians need to get their heads out of the sand, reform the RMA, and solve what everyone seems to acknowledge is an overbearing regulatory tax."
