Have your say on the new Border Clearance Levy

Have your say on the new Border Clearance Levy

Consultation on the design and implementation of the new Border Clearance Levy starts today.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and the New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) are seeking comment on proposed collection methods, rate differences for different transport types, and possible exemptions to the levy.

The overall Levy will be around $22 (GST incl.), as announced at Budget, with further refinements to more closely reflect cost differences between transport types and arrivals and departures. The proposed maximum amount payable for a cruise ship traveller on a round trip is $26.22. For remaining travellers (e.g. those on commercial passenger aircraft) the proposed maximum amount is $21.85.

As part of consultation, meetings will be held around New Zealand. You can register your interest in attending a public meetingto be held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in mid-July.

Comments can also be submitted to levyconsultation@mpi.govt.nz or sent via the post to:

Ministry for Primary Industries

P O Box 2526

Wellington 6140

Please include the term ‘Submission on the Border Clearance Levy’ clearly in the email subject line or on the front of the envelope.

The Levy will come into effect from 1 January 2016 and is expected to fully meet the costs of passenger border clearance by 2017/18.

The consultation document and supporting information can be found on the MPI website. Consultation will run from 16 June until 5.00 pm 28 July 2015.
