Joyce's Response to Taxpayer Funded Hair Straighteners a Disgrace
WEDNESDAY, 17 JUNE 2015
The Taxpayers’ Union, which earlier today awarded the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment a certificate of achievement for wasting taxpayer money, is shocked at Steven Joyce’s apparent lack of concern for his Ministry’s actions.
The Union is particularly disappointed that Mr Joyce made light of the new revelation that MBIE spent taxpayer money on installing hair straighteners for its staff. Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:
“Rather than taking responsibility or demanding accountability, the Minister is making a joke about his own baldness. A $70,000 sign, a $70,000 reception desk, a $140,000 telly, $5,500 for an arts consultant, and now hair straighteners. How bad does it need to get for Mr Joyce to rein in his Ministry?”
“We’re calling for some accountability. There is no need for a Ministerial scalp, but the continued culture of waste under Steven Joyce demands action. At the very least the person who approved spending $140,000 on a reception monitor should be shown the exit."
