Army to Commemorate 100 Year Anniversary of Chunuk Bair in Stratford

Officers and Soldiers of the 5th/7th Battalion of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment will march through the streets of Stratford on Saturday 8 August, with drums beating, band playing, colours flying, bayonets fixed and swords drawn. This will finish with a parade ceremony at the Malone Memorial Gates to mark the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of Chunuk Bair.

Mayor Neil Volzke says, “This is a very prestigious occasion and commemorates the strong links forged between the Stratford community and the events at Chunuk Bair 100 years ago. It is also an honour to host the New Zealand Army band who will lead the parade through Broadway.”

The parade will also include a LAV, armed vehicles and modern and vintage military vehicles. Following the parade the vehicles will be on display in the War Memorial car park.

The Hall of Remembrance will also be open over the weekend for those wishing to visit.

The parade starts at Page Street at 10am and will march along Broadway with a Police challenge at the clock tower then follow on to Regan Street, Miranda Street and end at the Malone Memorial gates.
