Fulbright NZ Seminar: Mind the (gender) gap: Women’s equality in New Zealand and the Pacific

Fulbright New Zealand and the Fulbright New Zealand Alumni Association are pleased to present an upcoming seminar on the topic of ‘Mind the (gender) gap: Women’s equality in New Zealand and the Pacific’.

New Zealand led the world in giving women the vote, but more than a century later it is dropping in international indexes measuring the gender gap. Distinguished Fulbright New Zealand alumni will discuss why and where to from here for women in New Zealand and the wider Pacific region during a panel discussion at the free seminar on Wednesday 19 August in Wellington.

The panel consists of lawyer Horiana Irwin-Easthope, writer and filmmaker Makerita Urale, Public Service Association national secretary Erin Polaczuk and journalist Nicola Kean.

Horiana Irwin-Easthope (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu, Rakaipāka) is a solicitor at Kahui Legal. She was the 2013 Fulbright New Zealand-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga recipient and has a Masters of Law from Harvard University.

Makerita Urale is a Samoan-born writer, theatre producer and documentary filmmaker. She was the 2010 Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific writer-in-residence.

Nicola Kean is a current affairs TV producer and a 2010 Fulbright grantee, with a Masters of Science from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism in New York.

The Fulbright New Zealand programme promotes mutual understanding between New Zealand and the United States through educational and cultural exchange.

By giving grantees opportunities to study, research, teach or present their work in top institutions, the awards open doors for tomorrow’s leaders and thinkers.

More than 8,000 people worldwide are participating in Fulbright exchanges this year, in more than 160 countries.

Fulbright New Zealand Executive Director Penelope Borland says these free thought leadership seminars are an opportunity to share the knowledge of alumni, who are the best and brightest in their fields.

“We are pleased to have a strong line up of seminars ahead on a diverse range of interesting topics,” Ms Borland says.

“This is in line with Fulbright New Zealand’s work as a not-for-profit promoting mutual understanding celebrating education and being a catalyst for the exchange of ideas on contemporary issues, international thinking and trends.”
