Police statement on ISIL list - plus family statement

"Police statement on ISIL list plus family statement"

Statement from New Zealand Police:

“Police is aware of the list reported in media this morning purporting to be from ISIL.

We are making enquiries about the list and liaising with the relevant agencies.

We have today been in contact with the family of a New Zealander who is named in the list and are providing appropriate support and advice to them.

The family have stressed that they do not know why their name has appeared, and are urging media to respect their privacy and publish no information about them, nor do they wish any contact from media.

Police can also find no reason why this individual’s name has appeared on this list.

Police will continue to work with the relevant agencies to provide appropriate support required for any individuals, and we will continue to ensure that New Zealanders are safe and feel safe.”

Police are also issuing this statement on behalf of the family of the New Zealander named on the list:

“We are at a loss to understand why our son’s name has appeared on this list.

He has no connection with the military or any security service.

We are very concerned about the information that has already appeared in the media and we strongly request that no information about our family is published.

We also do not wish to receive any further media calls at any time as this is simply adding to an already difficult situation for us.

We are liaising with New Zealand Police and we ask all media to respect our privacy now.”
