A sex offender register is a child’s right

Message to Chris Finlayson: Children’s Rights before criminals wrongs
A sex offender register is a child’s right

14 August 2015

The Attorney General has a responsibility as guardian of public interest, by definition that must include our children, but if Mr. Finlayson has been reported correctly it appears he is more concerned about the protection of child abusers than the protection of children. - McVicar
The Sensible Sentencing Trust is revolted that Attorney-General Chris Finlayson has said that a Government proposal to introduce a Child sex offender register does not comply with the Bill of Rights.

SST Founder Garth McVicar said the Attorney General has got his priorities wrong, “I would suggest that Mr. Finlayson has either lost the plot or has his priorities somewhat confused.”

The furor has erupted after Social Development Minister Anne Tolley said she would introduce legislation to establish a database of all child sex offenders 18 and over but Chris Finlayson said such a register would not comply with the Bill of Human Rights.

McVicar said that New Zealand's child death statistics are appalling, with six children killed in suspicious circumstances so far this year and on average, one dies every five weeks.”

“It's easy to rattle off numbers, but these are not just numbers – these are our children that rely on us as adults to protect them but many children are suffering horrific abuse.

“It seems to me the comments by Mr. Finlayson are underwriting and endorsing that abuse.”

“A child sex offender register is an essential human right of a child, unlike Mr Finlayson I certainly know whose human rights I prefer.” ENDS
