WCC's decision reckless and probably illegal
WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL'S DECISION RECKLESS AND PROBABLY ILLEGAL
THURSDAY 29 OCTOBER
2015
The Taxpayers’ Union is labelling the $2.4 million decision by Wellington City Councillors to only hire contractors paying a living wage as ‘reckless’.
Taxpayers’ Union Spokesman, Ben Craven, says:
“Charging a Rongotai pensioner more for the Council to pay its contractors more than is necessary won’t relieve poverty. It’s virtue signalling at best, and certainly a reckless disregard for the Council’s duty to be prudent."
“Even the Council’s own legal advice was that this measure is probably illegal and would result in enormous legal costs if it is challenged."
“The Local Government Act requires Councillors to provide public services efficiently. This is an ideological middle finger to ratepayers, some of whom don’t earn a ‘living wage’, to pay more for Council services."
