Meat Workers thank Labour Party for support

Meat Workers Union members working for AFFCO Talley’s in their eight North Island plants welcome the support shown at the NZ Labour Party conference over the weekend, says Graham Cooke, National Secretary, NZMWU.

A special resolution moved by the NZ Labour Party President and seconded by the NZ Labour Union affiliates supporting the fight of AFFCO Talleys workers for a fair collective agreement was passed unanimously.

“The resolution shows the deep concern and empathy for the workers employed by AFFCO Talley’s and how their unfair and unsafe work practices are impacting on poorer, rural communities.”

“The support from the political wing of the labour movement means a lot to AFFCO Talley’s meat workers. It sends a strong message that they are not alone, that there is a political voice for working people and there are people in NZ who are prepared to stand up for decent work.

In addition to the resolution, the conference raised $2748.30 in a whip-around and Labour has pledged to support AFFCO Talley’s workers, both in opposition and when Labour becomes the government in 2017.
