Vacancies rise 1.8 per cent in October – MBIE Jobs Online Report

The number of job vacancies advertised online rose by 1.8 per cent in October, while there was a 4.3 per cent rise across the year, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE) latest Jobs Online report.

The October rise was driven by increased vacancies in construction and engineering (up 2.8 per cent) and the accounting, human resources, legal and administration industry (up 1.2 per cent). The largest decrease was in information technology (down 1.1 per cent).

Vacancies increased in all occupation groups over the past month. The biggest increase was for machinery drivers and operators (up by 2.7 per cent) and community and personal services (up by 2.5 per cent).

The largest increases occurred in the lower skill levels with semi-skilled vacancies up 2.3 per cent and unskilled vacancies up 1.9 per cent. Highly skilled vacancies increased by 1.1 per cent.

Of the 10 regions, nine experienced an increase in vacancies. Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough/West Coast saw the largest increase (up 2.9 per cent), followed by Otago/Southland (up 1.5 per cent) and Waikato (up 1.4 per cent).

Vacancies in Canterbury fell by 0.8 per cent in October, and 5.8 per cent over the year.

MBIE’s Labour Market Trends Manager, David Paterson says, “The results are consistent with a positive turnaround in many business confidence measures in recent months.”
