Hikoi for Homes - major marches and rallies tomorrow
Hikoi for Homes - major marches and rallies occurring tomorrow in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch
Source: Child Poverty Action Group
The events - jointly organised by the Child
Poverty Action Group, Auckland Action Against Poverty, First
Union and Unite - promise to attract hundreds of people
moved to march for quality, affordable and safe housing for
all New Zealanders.
Aucklanders will walk through the state houses of Glen Innes and on to the elite properties of Kohimarama and Orakei; Wellingtonions will take in the central city’s Cuba Mall and Civic Square; Cantabrians will take over the eastern suburb of Linwood, near the Eastgate Shopping Centre.
Hikoi for Homes is promoting seven campaign asks:
- An immediate stop and to the sell-off of state and council housing
- A $1 billion annual budget for the provision of more state, public and not-for-profit housing
- Setting minimum standards for all rented housing
- Greater tenure protection for tenants
- Rent freeze for five years
- A statutory right to be housed
- State subsidies for modest income homeownership programmes
This is a call to action for all New Zealand citizens, rich and poor, to make a resounding statement to a government that’s negligent in providing basic living standards and welfare for its people.
Everyone deserves a home.
