Christians and Jews Come Together for the Environment

As their contribution to the Paris climate conference lead-up, congregations from St Peters Anglican Church and Temple Sinai (Wellington Progressive Jewish Congregation) came together yesterday for an afternoon of Interfaith learning and activity about the environment. The session was also supported by the Transition Churches network.

The “God’s Earth – Our Home” event was planned to bring the congregations together to learn and seek societal and practical solutions to our current environmental crisis. The session included a hands-on environmental audit of the Temple Sinai premises in inner-city Wellington, led by several eco-design experts. It resulted in a raft of practical advice for Temple Sinai, as well as all individuals attending, in their own home lives.

Reverend Brian Dawson from St Peters said: “In the wake of the weekend’s climate marches, it’s crucial that we ground ourselves in our own space and responsibilities. As people of faith this was our way of taking a step in that direction and our ongoing challenge is to make that step a whole new march”.

Dr Paul Blaschke, chairman of the Temple Sinai Board of Management, commented that “Our duty as Jews is Tikkun Olam - repair of our world. Today we learnt together to do just this, individually and collectively.”
